Microscopy Core (ALS 2070)

The CQLS microscopes are open to users around campus. Staff oversees the microscopes and can provide assisted imaging sessions, or training. Independent imaging time on the systems can be reserved once training is completed.Training is a combination of online material in CANVAS and some hands-on training for more complicated systems. The microscopy fees are available on our service fee pages.

Microscope Assisted Imaging & Training

To request a Training or Assisted Imaging session, Request from RELMS or Fill out the request form.

Assisted Imaging

Arrange an assisted imaging session to look at your specimen.Tell us as much as you can about your experiment in order to be the most helpful during your assisted session.

Confocal Training

New users must complete training before using the system. Training consists of online material through CANVAS which covers background material, confocal usage policies, directions for imaging with our system, and quizzes on material. After you've finished the online work arrange hands-on training sessions, practice sessions and a basic practical test in order to use the system independently. Initial training sessions will be on a standard slide. Trainee must bring well-prepared samples to be imaged to the subsequent training sessions. Training sessions are geared toward individual samples. Basic training includes topics such as Z-stack, tile scan, time course.  Advanced training is available on topics such as Spectral Imaging, FRET, FRAP, incubation chamber use.

Keyence BZ-X710 Fluorescence Microscope Training

CANVAS training available for using the microscope with or without camera. Brightfield images, Fluorescent imaging, Multi-color images, Z-stacks and Time courses.

Leica Stellaris 5 Confocal Microscope System (ALS 2070)

Stellaris5Confocal
  • Excitation and emission are both tunable to optimize dye excitation, reduce crosstalk, and reduce autofluorescence
  • Tunable White Light Laser (WLL)  (ex 485nm to 685 nm at 1nm step size), 8 simultaneous excitation lines from the WLL
  • 405 nm laser
  • Continuous, fully tunable spectral confocal detection from 410nm to 850nm
  • Four detectors can be operated in photon counting mode and can be used for Lifetime based tools (TauSense tools).
  • TauSense tools, a fluorescence lifetime derived tool set, provides functional information without traditional curve fitting options used with FLIM, allowing live unmixing of spectrally overlapping fluorescence signal (or removal of auto-fluorescence).

Zeiss LSM 780 NLO Confocal Microscope System (Retired)

An NSF Shared Instrumentation Grant supplemented by the OSU Research Office provided funding for the Zeiss LSM 780 NLO Confocal Microscope. The inverted microscope can generate either confocal images with the 32-channel internal GaAsP detector and two high sensitive internal PMTs, or multi-photon images with the internal detectors or to two GaAsP non-descanned detectors (NDD). Zeiss Microscope Citation

Microscope Analysis Workstations (ALS 3131)

Another imaging analysis workstation is available in ALS 2070 with a copy of the Leica LASX software.

An imaging analysis workstation is available for use with an extra copy of the Zeiss ZEN software upon request.
