Core Facilities
The CQLS Core Laboratory Facilities serve as a focal point for acquisition of new instrumentation and development of technologies. It provides services, technical expertise, and shared-use instrumentation in areas of genomics and microscopy. The lab works closely with the CQLS Computing and Bioinformatics groups which provide advanced computational resources for data mining, data analysis and database development.

The CQLS Genomics Core Laboratory has services and instruments in the following areas:
- Genomics – Illumina and GBS library preparation, and sequencing on the Illumina MiSeq and NextSeq 2000; Long read library preps for PacBio; Sanger sequencing and SSR fragment analysis on the 3730 DNA analyzer.
-
DNA/RNA extractions – Animal, plant, soil, King Fisher and custom extractions, High molecular weight DNA extractions
-
RNA/DNA QC and Analysis – QC and fragment sizing on the Agilent Bioanalyzer and TapeStation and Blue Pippen size selection
Shared Instrumentation Core (ALS 3139, ALS 3131)
- The equipment in our multi-user rooms ALS 3139 and ALS 3131, is available for use for trained users.
- Apply for instrument room access and training
- Reserve time through RELMS calendar for the instrument. You may need training before access is granted.
- Use of any of our equipment in ALS 3012 is still by appointment only with the appropriate PPE. You can make an appointment or contact an individual person.
- Shared Instrumentation – BioTek Synergy H1 Plate reader, NanoDrop One spectrophotometer, Qubit, ABI Absolute Q digital PCR, ABI 7500 real-time PCR, Azure c600 Gel Imager, BioRupter, SpeedVac, Qiagen TissueLyser II
Microscopy Core (ALS 2070)
The CQLS microscopes are open to users around campus. Staff oversees the microscopes and can provide assisted imaging sessions, or training. Independent imaging time on the systems can be reserved once training is completed.Training is a combination of online material in CANVAS and some hands-on training for more complicated systems.
