The 3730 has an array of 48 capillaries, and polymer is injected into these capillaries at the beginning of each run.  The 3730 injects 48 samples at a time, either all of the odd columns (1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11) or all of the even columns (2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12).  Therefore, if you have 48 samples (or less) submit them in alternating columns (either all odd or all even). The ordering system will reject submissions in other formats. Plates with more than 48 samples are not limited in well submission format although we prefer full columns of samples.

Prepare plates

  • Use 96 well plate that is compatible with ABI 3730 machines (e.g. 96-well plate: ABI #N801-0560; ISC #T-3085-1; Phenix MSP-3590)
  • Sample volumes 0.5 to 1.5 µl
  • For 48 or less samples, place the samples in alternating columns (i.e. 1,3,5,7,9,11 or 2,4,6,8,10,12). Match the well and the sample information in the csv file. See plate formats.
  • Label plate with Order Number

Fill out Genotyping template CSV file with sample information

  • Use CSV template downloadable through ordering system, on the genotyping home page.
  • Properly filled out forms are important for data integrity
  • This spreadsheet is submitted with your sample names and these names must correspond to the well locations for those samples.  Therefore if you submit 48 or less samples, be sure the sample names are in the correct rows (either all odd or all even).
  • For each plate record submitted:
    • The first 5 rows should remain unchanged
    • Column A (well info) should not be changed
    • Column B (sample name) is required
    • NOTE:  Use only letters and numbers; no spaces in sample name, and many symbols are not allowed
    • Column C (comment) is optional and can include spaces, symbols and alpha-numeric information that is useful to you (e.g. primer names, dilution factors, etc.)
    • Other columns are not necessary to fill out
    • When filling out the csv file for a plate with less than 96 samples,  leave the well number annotation in place for the full and empty wells.  Give sample names to only the wells with sample and leave the empty well sample names blank.

Place order

Place order through our web ordering system CQLS Web Ordering Site

  • Billing information
  • Researcher-defined parameters (e.g. internal standard, fragment sizes, dyes used)
  • attach CSV file with plate information
  • Samples will be charged by the half-plate or full plate.

Drop off genotyping plates

Drop off genotyping plates in the CQLS freezer in ALS 3137C during business hours Monday-Friday, 9:00 - 5:00.

Turnaround Time

  • Typical turnaround time is generally 1-2 business days from the time you drop off your samples and submit your online order.
  • It is often the case that smaller jobs (<49 samples) will get same day results if dropped off early.
  • When workload is high your jobs may be interleaved with those of other researchers.
  • This is especially true if you drop off > 4 x 96 well plates at a time.
  • Data is posted to the server within 24 hours after running the samples.
  • Contact us if this does not happen.
  • Genotyping may be shut down for a few days now and then for routine maintenance or to accommodate staff vacations.
